What is an NPO?

Norwich Pharmacal Orders, often referred to as ‘NPO’s’, are a form of disclosure order which requires an innocent third party mixed up in the wrongdoing to provide information as to the identity of the anonymous wrongdoer.

It is a useful tool where a victim doesn’t know the identity of the wrong doer but can identify a third party who has the information.

NPO’s are most frequently used in fraud cases to allow the victim of the fraud to obtain information from financial institutions to unmask the villain behind the fraud and/or trace the proceeds of the fraud.

NPO’s can be used in many other cases such as:

Defamation: To obtain information from social media platforms and internet service providers to obtain information to identify the perpetrator such as their IP address, name, email address and phone number.

Harassment: To identify the perpetrator and obtain information from social media platforms and telephone companies to identify the perpetrator such as name, phone number, address and email address.

Intellectual Property: To obtain information from financial institutions and online selling platforms to trace the seller of counterfeit goods and the sale proceeds.
