TALENT-DRIVEN PROGRESSION AT BRANDSMITHS

Author: Amber Spong

Ewen Sharpe’s recent promotion to Senior Associate.

At Brandsmiths, we believe in rewarding talent and hard work, ensuring that progression reflects individual achievements and contributions rather than age, rank, or time served.

Ewen Sharpe’s recent promotion to Senior Associate demonstrates this approach, and recognises those who go above and beyond in their roles.

Ewen’s Journey
Prior to becoming a solicitor, Ewen assisted with the development of businesses in the financial services sector and uses that experience to assist with providing clear, commercial, advice to clients.

Following his qualification in 2019, Ewen has advised on and successfully led a wide range of complex commercial disputes in the High Court, several of which have been reported. These include disputes involving the enforcement of securities and commercial contracts, property, breaches of restrictive covenants, as well as intellectual property, partnership and insolvency disputes.

Ewen also practices non-contentious commercial matters, having previously advised on a wide range of commercial agreements and securities.

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

“When I went to university, it wasn’t really in my mind that I wanted to do law. I actually studied a business degree at the University of Liverpool.

When I graduated, I got my first job working for a financial services’ firm. I was involved in dealing with financial claims, enjoyed it a lot and I realised I wanted to become a solicitor. So, whilst I was working full time, I put myself through law school and converted my business degree to a law degree. Shortly after that, I secured a training contract at a local firm in Manchester and eventually ended up at Brandsmiths.”

How have you developed your ability to manage both technical legal work and client relationships?

“From an early point in my career, I was encouraged to go out, meet clients, make connections and do business development. Because I was encouraged to do that, it helped with client management skills because I’ve had continuous, direct contact with clients from the very beginning.

Brandsmiths has a very similar mindset, and everyone here is encouraged and supported with client management and business development efforts. Day to day, I work closely with some extremely talented people like Michael, Jake and David. We all have different qualities, but everyone is intelligent and driven. You learn a lot from working alongside these people every day.”

What do you think is the most important quality for succeeding as a lawyer?
“It’s a job that can be quite full on with long hours, so you need to enjoy what you do. That’s very important.”

Brandsmiths Founder Adam Morallee was delighted to award the promotion to Ewen.

“Since joining Brandsmiths in November 2023, Ewen has shown all the qualities we look for in our senior leaders, not just in the recording of hours but in the origination of work and how he interacts with staff, both junior and more senior to him.

At 5 years PQE, the promotion comes at an early stage in his career but demonstrates our commitment to progress through the firm being about talent and hard work, not age or seniority.”
